Unit 9: Passive Voice

Passive voice is very useful when describing actions. It usually begins with the object.

BASIC FORM:
The basic format of passive voice is: Object + to be verb + past tense verb 

The food was cooked.
The game is being played.
The castle has been built.

This is a list of [to be verb] phrases:
is being
is
are
was
were
has/have been

Remember that time is important in tense.

What is the different between the following?

The food is cooked.
The food is being cooked.
The food has been cooked.
The food was cooked.

Time is the answer!


ADDITIONAL FORMS:

The format of passive voice with additional info is: Object + to be verb + past tense verb + (preposition) + Subject.

The food was cooked by mom.
The game is being played on the field.
The castle has been built with help.

EXTRA ADDITIONAL FORMS:
Even more info has be added using adjectives, adverbs, and additional prepositions and subjects.

Adjective + Object + [to be verb] + adverb + past tense verb + (preposition) + Subject + (preposition) + Subject/object.

The delicious food was quickly cooked by mom in the kitchen.
The tiring game is being crazily played on the field by monsters.
The gigantic castle has been beautifully built with help from kittens.
