Giving and Supporting an Opinion
In academic settings, you may need to state your opinions in discussions, debates, presentations, or papers. When you state your opinions, you must give reasons (facts and examples) to support them. Here are some helpful expressions.
To give an opinion To support an opinion
I think/believe/feel that … because
In my opinion for several reasons:
It seems to me that …

Example
I think that Edvard Munch’s painting The Scream of Nature is frightening, because the people behind the man screaming look like faint ghosts and the shadow on the river could be a portrayal of death. The sky is orange and yellow so it looks like the sunset. The man screaming is gray with his hands held up to his face to show that he is is scared. It is a good painting because it is easy to remember. It makes me feel nervous. It is scary but playful.
When you give an opinion, use strong support to persuade your audience to agree with you.
Make sure your ideas are detailed, logical, and clear (easy to understand).
Use reasons, examples, common sense, expert evidence, or statistics.
Choose words that show your level of certainty (is /must be/ may be/ might be, could be).

DEGREES of CERTAINTY:

IS = 100%
MUST BE = 75-99%
LIKELY IS = 50-99%
MAY BE = 25-75%
MIGHT BE =

Write your opinion about the following eight paintings:
Describe what you see in the painting.
Give your opinion about whether the painting is good or bad. Why?
Why do you think the painter made it look this way.? (Use degrees of certainty)
How does the painting make you feel? Explain why.

Biography on Picasso

As you read this biography of Pablo Picasso, make note of what statements are facts and what statements are opinions. You will make a list of ten facts and ten opinions from the biology.

Pablo Picasso is one of the best-known artists of the 20th century. He has influenced every artist who came after him.

Picasso was born in 1881 in Malaga, Spain. Even at a young age, all who knew him recognized his artistic talent as extraordinary. Picasso was accepted to the Royal Academy of Art in Barcelona, Spain, when he was only 15 years old. At age 19, he moved to France.

Picasso’s paintings are often grouped by his different styles. In his “blue period,” between 1901 and 1904, his paintings showed images of poor people and were painted in tones of blue. These are the saddest paintings ever created.

During Picasso's “rose period" (1904-1906), Picasso used lighter colors and painted scenes from circus life. Although these masterpieces are more upbeat and happy, the artwork he created during his blue period was superior and of a higher quality.

Picasso is best known for his creation of an art style called cubism in 1907. He used geometric shapes like cubes and cones to represent people and objects. When you first see these paintings, it is difficult to figure out what you are looking at. As you look more closely at the paintings, you can see the unique vision that went into creating them. His best paintings were his abstracts, in which nothing looks like what it’s supposed to be.

Later, Picasso tried working in other forms of art, including ceramics and sculpture. In fact, you may have tried one of the styles that Picasso helped popularize, in which he attached bits of paper and other scraps to a canvas. It is called collage.

Near the end of his life, Picasso married a much younger woman named Jacqueline. He made more than 400 portraits of her during their eleven years of marriage using a variety of the artistic styles that he had experimented with throughout his entire career. Many of the paintings are very romantic and charming because they show his love for Jacqueline.

Picasso died in 1973 in Mougins, France. He was a legend in his own time as he was one of the rare artists that achieved fame and fortune before death. “The Old Guitarist” (1903), “Three Musicians” (1921), and “Guernica” (1937) are some of the works of which he best remembered.
